High Reaches Weyr « Result #2 on May 14, 2009, 9:37pm »
The Senior gold rose again, and this time it was bronze Rudith, the Weyrlingmaster’s dragon, who caught Elsibeth. Tr’vas has made the switch easily, and he and Joliene are working together as if they’ve been doing it for Turns.
But shortly after this, High Reaches’ weyrling goldrider, the first one in two hundred Turns, was injured and died, and her gold went *between*. The weyrfolk were devastated.
Now they must begin again. Perhaps Elsibeth’s clutch will have another gold, or Tansith’s afterwards. Everyone will have to wait and see.
Hopefully the Lord Holders will give them the chance, though it seems unlikely. At least one Lord Holder in their territory actively works against them. And Thread should begin in a little over a year, assuming those who believe it will return are correct.
Will there be time for the Weyr to grow?
High Reaches Weyr is a PbEM/zine club set at the end of the First Long Interval. We've produced three zines already, two of them over a hundred pages. We're always looking for new members and we have plenty of status positions available - including a gold egg in the near future - if you're interested.
At Mavros Weyr, your character can be a dragonrider or a craftsman, a scholar or a child. Mavros is a relaxed canon weyr-hold based on the classic Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. Located around a volcanic caldera, the settlement is composed of banished dragonriders and the people they fight to protect from the alien menace called Thread. When you create a character at Mavros, you enter a world where the fate of an island balances on a knife's edge, and where flying on dragon wings is not an idle dream, but a deadly necessity.
We departed from Tidewalk Hold on the first day of the eighth month. It was high summer, and the seas were calm. The conflict between myself and Senior Weyrwoman Kalena had escalated, and violence between our factions had broken out. In the interest of stopping further bloodshed it was determined that the more junior queen and her supporters should quit the weyr for good...
That meant Asurath and I. With a contingent of thirty-three riders and twenty weyrlings, as well as one hundred eight-six assorted holders and weyrfolk, we chose to form a new weyrhold on one of the lower Western Ring Islands rather than disperse amongst the other weyrs. Mavros was the one we chose.
So, while the weyrfolk and other holders were brought to Mavros on dragonback one by one, along with the supplies we had managed to accumulate, the fisherfolk set sail with their families and a number of riders accompanying them.
Already settled into the natural caves of Mavros Bay, we awaited their arrival with impatience. Candidate Master S’ten, thinking to give the weyrlings flight practice, decided to take them out to meet the fleet halfway. They departed, and the rest of us waited, even as the weather became stormy, and lightning struck the highest rock on Mavros. Then, suddenly, blue Nesporth blinked from between, bearing his severely injured rider and one desperate message which made all our blood run cold.
Thread.
No one had anticipated the early onset of the 10th pass.
Ayden Weyr was established during the First Interval, nestled far down on the North-Western coats of the Southern Continent. There the riders and the Weyrfolk lived with a close connection with the North, collecting and researching information. They stayed true to roots, their common origins of the North. For many Turns the Weyr flourished, joint with the Weyrs of the North. Their knowledge of the dragons and their smaller cousins rose, and their research was helpful through Pern, not just in the South. Three Holds, each having their own immense store of knowledge formed and flourished under the protection and help of Ayden Weyr. The bond with the North grew stronger every day and in turn so did the Weyr.
But then Thread hit Pern, falling and devastating life as people knew it. All across Pern, the mighty dragons rose to flame their enemy from the sky, and Ayden -- tiny compared to the Weyrs of the North -- was faced with a most difficult choice. Break the connection with the North to survive the fall of Thread keeping their riders close; or abandon their roots. Some left, not wanting to loose connection with the stable North, but most stayed. They did not want to relinquish what they had worked so hard to achieve. And eventually Thread passed and Turns came and went and all memory of the North began to fade, even if their own knowledge did not.
Now, on the very brink of the Ninth Pass, the rumours of riders across the sea are getting stronger everyday. Rumours of forces massing in great numbers. Stories, forgotten by most, kept living by a few, are resurfacing and the dragons are whispering. A Dragongifted rider across the sea from a home long forgotten...

Azedor Weyr - Are YOU a dragonrider of Pern? « Result #5 on Feb 12, 2009, 8:17pm »
AZEDOR WEYR A Play By E-mail Pern RPG
Take your first step into the wide world of PERN, a world where chivalry is not yet dead and the land is ruled by powerful Lords and Ladies, where everyone knows his place and there is a place for everyone, and where one need only glance to the skies to catch a glimpse of the mighty beasts who for centuries have defended the planet against the deadly rain of thread.
Choose your allegiance. Are you a Lord Holder's man, proud tiller of the land you live on, spending your days laboring in the warm glow of the sun? Will you apprentice yourself to a craftsman, perhaps, and become skilled in the delicate artistry of your given Craft? Or is it YOUR destiny to become one of the lucky few to Impress one of the noble dragons, to make your home in one of the ancient Weyrs to which the whole world looks for protection, and to bear the title of dragonrider?
Set in the last Turns before the beginning of an Alternate Ninth Pass, Azedor Weyr is one of seven Northern Weyrs, all at full-fighting capacity. The Southern Continent lies unexplored, a lifeless wasteland that holds no interest for the North. Nearing the end of a Long Interval, the dragonriders of Pern believe that thread will never again fall from the face of the ominous Red Star hanging in the sky above them. Life couldn't be better for the Pernese.
Unfortunately, nothing too good can last for very long. Within the Turn, Azedor Weyr will be at war. But how could this happen, and against whom? For these answers, and for many more, you must join the ranks of Azedor Weyr's riders and wait alongside all Pern with baited breath.
Join Azedor Weyr and witness the dawning of a new age--an age of brewing trouble and simmering plots, of politics and pleasantries, and of Weyrleaders and common folk alike. Witness an age that Pern has never known...

We are a moderate to advanced roleplaying group and appreciate quality of roleplay. Please stop over and check us out.
The History and Setting of Carew Weyr
Carew Weyr was established towards the end of the first interval, shortly after Benden, High Reaches and Telgar. In our setting, Ista Weyr does not exist and Carew Weyr was founded in its place. Likewise, Ista Hold does not exist. Instead the principle hold is Carew Hold. When Carew Weyr was established, its construction utilized the last of the energy of the ancients' rock cutting equipment, which enabled quite spacious and comfortable accommodations.
Since Carew Weyr is located where Ista Weyr would be in the published novels, it enjoys the same tropical type of climate. There are basically two seasons; the hot season and the rainy one.
Since our timeline starts during the end of the First Long Interval prior to the Fifth pass of the Red Star, AIVAS has not been found (nor will it be), none of the events of the 9th pass have taken place, and green dragons impressing to women is neither unheard of nor uncommon.
During the preceding turns, Pern has been enjoying the first of the prolonged intervals; four hundred long turns during which the Red Star has passed out of Pern’s orbit and Thread has not fallen upon the planet. Because of this, Thread is viewed at worst, as a myth, and at best, as a threat no longer. Only the most traditional and stalwart holders and craftsmen believe that the Threads will return. Even some dragonmen have become convinced that Thread is no more.
At this time, several factors have converged to put the future of the Weyrs and indeed, all of Pern, in grave peril. Due to the long interval, the Lord Holders are disgruntled at tithing to their beholden weyr. Such tithes have become skimpy and in some cases, have fallen off altogether. Dragonriders have fallen into planet-wide disfavor and are not being accorded the courtesies which were prevalent during earlier times. Most recently, in turn 1255, three turns before the pass is due to start, a virulent plague has swept through the populace and decimated the ranks of Dragonriders. Though the illness was not often fatal to humans, it happened to be one of the few zoonotic diseases which could affect dragons as well as people and it hit the dragon population far harder than the humans.
Many of Pern’s great dragons were killed by the illness, with the disease hitting those in the prime of their lives the hardest. Worse, of those Queens that are left after the plague, many have not risen in mating flights, though in the prime of their lives and are feared to be sterile. It is believed that those Queens who were but mildly stricken with the plague are still fertile, but no one knows what strange effects, if any, the illness will have upon future generations. The only thing that has possibly saved the dragon population is that just before the plaque hit, several clutches were laid, and several of them with Queen eggs.
Now, mid way through turn 1256, the plague has finally dwindled to an end, leaving the weyrs demoralized and filled with such ex-riders as did not suicide when their dying dragons went between and the grieving families, friends, weyrmates and lovers of those riders who could not bear life without their beloved lifemates.
Will the Weyr and indeed, all of Pern, be able to recover from the Plague before thread returns in less than 2 turns? That is the challenge which hangs over Carew Weyr as the residents struggle to regroup from the terrible tragedy which befell them.
The Great Epidemic was devastating. Nobody knows what started it, but it spread through the whole of Pern like a wildfire. It did not seem to affect dragons, but no dragon will live when their rider has gone, so every time a rider died, yet another dragon went between forever. Pern is just recovering from this disaster. But many are dead, and those who have survived are weak. Everyone left has come together in one area, with just one remaining active weyr. Blaze Weyr. There is but one queen that has survived, a young gold named Liyorath. She, her rider, the Weyrwoman Aria, and a handful of other riders are all that's left to protect the remaining inhabitants of Pern from the menace of Threadfall, which will be here in just a few short Turns...
Mating Flight in progress! Candidates and middle/low ranking riders needed!
